ec123 Dhangsha guides us with track titles, but the music itself is always mysterious. It has that punk spirit that is dirty, muddy, and subversive. A great deal of care has clearly gone into each track; there is a careful consideration of space here. Yet, each track is more unpredictable and compelling than the last. Brutal, subaqueous textures; unsettling ametric rhythms. Favorite track: MUSIC FOR ARMS FAIRS #3.

about

By placing repetitious “mutant dancehall” motifs through innumerable refractions, DHANGSHA analogises the persistent, many-faced violence of the UK rightwing project: the enactment of racist government policy, the incessantly hateful media rhetoric, police brutality, right down to insults hurled on the street. Yet ABERRANT also enacts the very opposite, pulling on the history of sound system culture as an agent of political resistance, hauling up the full body-rattling vigour of low frequencies and guttural kicks. Dhangsha's own politics are anarchist and anti-colonial, and thus the destructive energy of his music is directed right at the root. Rhythms are crushed through distortion and other FX, often reducing them to sputtering husks of their original selves. It’s an acknowledgement that liberation arises not from tweaking inherently rotten structures of power, but through their total abolition.

DHANGSHA (Bengali for ‘destruction’) is the project and alias of sound artist Aniruddha Das. He works at the interface of bass culture and experimental electronica, creating a kind of "mutant dancehall" where distorted 'alien' motifs evolve and disintegrate over sparse but heavy beats. Through the processes of sampling and sequencing, he explores minimalism, repetition and fragmentation, instigating interactions between metered and non-metric rhythm and noise, and attentive to the potential for expressing political sentiment using these principles. Aside from releasing three albums, "Future Tense,” "Autonomous Zones" and “Live at Spirit of Gravity,” he has contributed to compilations by Iklectik, Syrphe and Avon Terror Corps. Dhangsha's overwhelming passion is live performance and he has played throughout the UK, in Colombia at electronic festival Bogotrax and in Europe. He is a commissioned participant of the AHRC funded initiative ‘Exploring Cultural Diversity in Experimental Sound’, based at the University of Greenwich and examining the relative lack of Black and South Asian practitioners in experimental music in the UK.
