about

After a phenomenal EP of dub-influenced minimalism on Chinabot back in June, King Rambo Sound harnesses the power of extended repetition for a new record on Hard Return. As he explains, this is “music about the pleasures we get from doing the same things in life. I use a sauna to warm myself up and then take a cold-water bath. Then I take a break and return to the sauna. After repeating over and over this process, my brain goes into a trance state. I sublimated this sensation into my work.”

Each of these six tracks skirts the rim of eternity. “Liquefaction Technique” wobbles upon the same pattern for 11 minutes, with subtle modulations renewing the vibrancy without breaking the spell. “Still Insane” hits a euphoric dead-end at about five minutes and crushes itself into the wall for the remaining four. As well as lifting the listener into trance states, longer duration allows for a deep appraisal of King Rambo Sound’s masterful rhythmic construction. Every hi-hat is perfectly placed. Every bass tone is perfectly sculpted. As the repeats keep coming, the exquisite beat-craft at the centre of Beyond The Pale only becomes clearer.
