about

20 minutes of noise-through-gritted-teeth courtesy of Mark Lyken (formerly Rural Noise, now Janza Slope), forcing itself into persistence in a strained parade of overblown chunks and wheezes. Acute listening reveals its hinter-lurking intricacies: swooshes like the brush of little rodent tails, specks of colour bursting up through the noise like crushed-up telephone conversations. It's one nauseating balancing act: never bursting open, never falling silent, holding itself within a weary liminality until it simply can't.

Janza Slope is Mark Lyken, a film & sound artist based in rural Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
