about

Central to these six pieces for no-input mixer is the motif of rapid-fire pulsations. Occasionally they deviate – letting slip the odd high-frequency squeal or static hiss – but the pulses always return, like moth wings beating against a lightbulb between divergent flutters into open space. It’s a perilous balancing act, introducing minor changes that explore various angles of the texture while mostly managing to keep the underlying pitter-patter rhythm intact. Of course, there are wonderful moments when Atkins topples over the brink, the sound spiralling through drastic transformations and shedding the pulse completely, before enacting a scrambling recovery.

Matt Atkins is a London based sound and visual artist whose principle interests are reductionism, chance, repetition and texture. He uses objects, percussion instruments, occasionally a laptop and cassette recorders to create sound collages in both the recorded medium and live, often in collaborative performances. Over the past few years he has collaborated with the likes of Chemiefaserwerk, Phil Maguire, Andy Klingensmith, Costis Drygianakis, Tim Olive and Diurnal Burdens among others. He runs the label Minimal Resource Manipulation and curates and presents the show Auricular Shelter on CAMP Radio.
