Guitar is the primary source for this collection of cyclical figurines, with repetition pressing beyond the melody and into the peripheral particulars of room sound, string buzz and amp hiss. Often the record feels like the breakaway solo pursuit of a post-punk guitarist, escaping the dynamics of full-band collaboration to embark instead on spirals of self-scrutiny, peering deep into the holes of the amplifier grill, fastening attention to tiny modulations in FX-pedal dials, or the snap of plectrum attack reflecting off the walls, or the grain of microphone fidelity, or fuzz cresting on the edge of a resonating tone. Each repeat further emphasises the sheer simplicity of this work, yet somehow complicates it too.
