Two elements are at the centre of The Night Is Young. First are the records and gramophone of Paul Nataraj's grandparents: Joan and Stanley Gajewski at 10 Grovesnor Place. The clunk of gramophone startup, the operatic voices and piano trills, the plosive thunks of the needle coming down. Second is the act of repetition – loops and miniature stutters are made by manipulating the gramophone itself and also through post-processing, with Nataraj experimenting with various techniques to wring the records for their sonic potential. Inevitably, reviving old family artefacts like this destabilises the flow of time. The mind snags on faint memories from the distant past, which naturally hit differently in the present. The crackle of the gramophone dissipates into reverb and then returns, enclosing the music and then liberating it, rendering the music as both a figment of the deep past and here, airborne in the present.
